An infant with dimples on both shoulders.

چکیده
1 of 2 DESCRIPTION A 2-month-old female infant was referred to the paediatrician because the parents had noticed dimples on both shoulders. The lesions were present at birth. The baby was born at 38+5 weeks by vaginal delivery after an uncomplicated pregnancy. She was the fi rstborn child of non-consanguineous parents. Physical examination was unremarkable except for two symmetrical dimples with a depth of several millimetres at the acromion ( fi gures 1 and 2 ). There was no restriction of movement of the shoulders. Such dimples did not occur in other family members. Symmetrical dimples of the skin overlying the acromial processes of the scapulae are so called bi-acromial dimples. 1 These dimples are found infrequently, and are a solitary fi nding in most cases. However, bi-acromial dimples have been reported as part of malformation syndromes such as 18q deletion syndrome, and skeletal dysplasias. 2 The pathophysiological mechanism of bi-acromial dimples is unclear. It has been suggested that they are the result of entrapment of tissue between sharp bone structures and the uterine wall. However, this does not explain why the dimples can occur symmetrical, or why they can occur as a familial trait. 3 The latter suggests a molecular genetic mechanism. The occurrence of solitary symmetrical bi-acromial dimples is benign in nature and abstinence from further diagnostic investigations is permissible.

A Cross-Sectional Assessment of Cutaneous Lumbosacral and Coccygeal Physical Examination Findings in a Healthy Newborn Population
Objective. The purpose of this study is to describe the range and frequency of cutaneous lumbosacral and coccygeal findings encountered during the newborn examination in a population of apparently healthy babies, to determine if the prevalence of these findings is associated with race/ethnicity, and to report the frequency of co-occurrence of low-risk cutaneous findings. Methods. Lumbosacral ph...

متن کاملSkin dimpling as a complication of amniocentesis: histopathologic findings.
During pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum, a series of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are currently performed which have led to reduced neonatal morbidity and mortality but which have also increased the risk of certain iatrogenic cutaneous and traumatic injuries. The incidence of fetal puncture due to amniocentesis has declined since the introduction of ultrasound guidance; however, inc...
متن کاملEffect of laser-dimpled titanium surfaces on attachment of epithelial-like cells and fibroblasts
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to conduct an in vitro comparative evaluation of polished and laserdimpled titanium (Ti) surfaces to determine whether either surface has an advantage in promoting the attachment of epithelial-like cells and fibroblast to Ti. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-eight coin-shaped samples of commercially pure, grade 4 Ti plates were used in this study. These disc...
متن کاملWrinkling crystallography on spherical surfaces.
We present the results of an experimental investigation on the crystallography of the dimpled patterns obtained through wrinkling of a curved elastic system. Our macroscopic samples comprise a thin hemispherical shell bound to an equally curved compliant substrate. Under compression, a crystalline pattern of dimples self-organizes on the surface of the shell. Stresses are relaxed by both out-of...
